As visual as our society has become, it is no longer just disigners and editors who need access to quality stock photos. Whether you write articles for Associated Content, or you are just looking fro some interesting photos to use on your blog, there are a number of great websites that offer pictures of just about anything you can imagine. My favorite, however, is Stock.XCHNG which can be found at
Stock.XCHNG (pronounced Stock Exchange) claims to be the leading free stock photo site on the internet. They have over 250,000 full resolution photos available for free download from over 25,000 photographers from all over the world. It was founded in early 2001 to allow users to share their photos free of charge.
You do not even have to have an account to browse the amazing photos that stock.xchng has to offer. If you want to download them at their full resolution, however, you will. This is a relatively painless process, however, as it is absolutely free and only requires providing a little bit of information. As soon as you have an account, you can download to your hearts content without paying a cent for some very beautiful and unique images.
The best part about stock.xchng, however, is not that you can download the images for free, but that you can also use them for free. Whether you want to use the images for your own personal use as a desktop on your computer or whether you want to use them on a commercial website, you still pay the same. Nothing. You will never owe the photographer or stock.xchng one cent in royalties for the use of the images that you find on find on the website. Of course, there are many royalty free image sites on the internet, but the vast majority of them require that you pay at least something when you initially download the image. These frees are usually pretty low, but free is still cheaper!
Of course, stock.xchng does have to impose some usage restrictions. The standard restrictions prevent you from using the image for pornographic or illegal purposes, to promote products or services if the image depicts a person, in a way that will give stock.xchng or the photographer a bad name, or as part of a trademark or logo. Additionally, you cannot sell the image.
You can, however, use the image in digital or print form including in promotional materials for commercial purposes, as part of your corporate identity, or to decorate any space either digitally or in print. Thus, you can really use the images for almost anything. If you were to write a book, you could put an image you got for free off of stock.xchng on the cover!
Individual users do sometimes impose additional requirements on the use of their photos, but these are usually very reasonable and include requiring the user to inform the photographer when the image is used and that they must be credited when the image is used. Again, these are very reasonable usage restrictions.
If you do not find what you were looking for on stock.xchng, you might want to try its sister site, stockxpert. This is a commercial site which offers additional images for very reasonable fees. It is not free, but it is still a good value.
